Legba in my head, with Enoze, in Jacmel, Haiti 2003

In January of 2003, I traveled to Jacmel Haiti with my husband and initiated in orthodox Haitian Vodou. The learning experience of integrating the lessons I took from my Kanzo into my life has been a journey through a forest of ignorance, fear and myths. Ignorance on the part of folks who grew up with Hollywood's version of this beautiful faith. Fear of the Vodou, due to the ignorance of what it really is and the breaking down the myths of those fears.

And like any journey, it covered a myriad of places, some good, some not so good. Vodou is a religion of great beauty, but like the island of Haiti, it's birthplace, it has suffered at the hands of the unknowledgeable and the ignorant. It is my wish to try and alleviate some of that ignorance through these pages. I hope to add more as time goes on.

For Papa, because I know he is well pleased by all that I accomplish.
For Simbi, who guards my back and guides my heart.
And for my sister Sallie Ann, who opened the door for me. Ashe!
