The Badji is the altar room of a Vodou temple. Here, the Mambo engages her spirits in work for family, friends and clients. It’s often a beautiful room, filled with bright fabrics, colorful pictures, electric sequined flags and bowls of fresh picked herbs. Only the best will do for Mambo in her work. In Vodou, when one asks for specific work, it falls into three categories.
Pwen are little bundles of power and goods that are tied with specific things for the specific problem at hand. Irresistible to the Spirits, they contain all the good things Mambo can pack into a small container. Worn on your body, placed in your home or out in your yard, they carry an ashe that can not be denied!
Novenas are the Candle Prayers that are offered up by Mambo for people. Specially consecrated candles are prayed over in langaj, the forgotten tongues of Africa. Novenas are powerful prayer cycles that can bring about amazing results.
Wanga is for the truly tough cases. A combination of prayer, power and magic that is the core of Mambo’s work. Wanga is used when nothing else works, and the petitioner is sure that the result of the request is desired.
