Maraj Lwa : A Mystical Marriage to the Lwa

Vodou has many ways in which you can make a meaningful commitment to the Lwa. There is the Lave Tet service, to help clear your head for better communication with the Spirits. Vodou also offers a garde, to make a deeper commitment with a particular Lwa. But for teh truly fervent servitor, there is a major ceremony that united you with the Lwa in a mystical union. One which confers health, abundance and blessings. For those people who wish to truly serve without being initiated into the Religion of Vodou, you can marry your favorite Lwa, there by making a deep, personal commitment to them and they to you.

A Maraj Lwa (creole for Marriage to the Lwa) is a special ceremony, with all the planning, pomp and circumstance that we've come to associate with any wedding service. There is a minister (pret savanne) who performs the religious aspects of the service. There is wedding cake and champagne. There is a marriage contract, which is binding in both word and vows. And there are wedding rings, which you wear, wedding clothes, for both you and the Lwa you are marrying! Guests are invited to witness the ritual - you still need a Maid of Honor and a Best Man! Gifts for the happy couple, a feast for the guests - it's as elaborate or as simple as you wish to make it!

A Maraj Lwa is also more than just a big ceremony and dance. It's a lifetime commitment. This is not a lightly done event! By committing to marriage, you are in effect, a full time spirit wife or husband. There are obligations and commitment, rituals to be performed and of course, service to be offered for a lifetime. And unlike a human union, there is no divorce! Marriage is until you pass from this life into the next. But a life connected so deeply to the Lwa brings it's own rewards - health, abundance and blessings.

Sosyete du Marche’s Maraj Lwa is an all inclusive event. We provide the Sosyete’s singers and drummers for the marriage ceremony itself. We host a champagne and cake reception for up to ten guests. And we offer regular food and drink to everyone present, to complete the service aspects of the event. You provide the rings, the wedding outfits and the gifts. We can also cater the affair for you as well. As we said, it can be as elaborate or as simple as you wish to make it.
